Narrative
Legendary filmmaker Mike Leigh returns to the modern world with a fierce, compassionate and often dark study of family and the difficult bonds that bind us together. First seen in Secrets & Lies after multiple Oscar nominations, the incredible Marianne Jean-Baptiste plays Pansy, a troubled and fearful woman prone to furious tirades against her husband, son and all appearances of her own. Meanwhile, her easygoing younger sister, played by Michele Austin (Another Year), is a single mother whose life is as different from Pansy’s as their conflicting personalities – filled with the communal warmth of both her salon clients and her daughters. This sweeping film from a master actor draws us into the intensities of kinship, duty and that most enduring of human mysteries: that even amid life’s heartbreaks and hardships, we find ways to love those we call family.
